Laser Tattoo Removal - involves the use of Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation technology to gradually remove unwanted tattoos deep within the skin. Although, tattoo ink is intended to exist deep between the skin's epidermis and dermis layers, prior to lasers the only two tattoo removal methods worked entirely on the surface of the skin.

Before laser tattoo removal, the methods commonly used to remove tattoos were either to cut out tattooed skin, known as excision, or aggressively sand off the tattoo design with an abrasive instrument, known as dermabrasion. Then in the late 80's, laser technology was introduced as an alternative tattoo removal method. The significant difference lasers introduced to tattoo removal was the approach of bypassing the skin's surface to work at removing ink deep within the skin. When an intense beam of an exact, narrow wavelength of laser light is directed at the skin, it causes very precise tissue destruction to it's target (e.g. the target being a specific color of ink pigment), which does not affect the surrounding skin tissue. The specific wavelength of light energy lasers use is attracted to individual tattoo pigments embedded in the skin. Each color of tattoo ink absorbs the energy of a particular laser's wavelength. When the ink takes on the energy it expands to the point, which the large ink molecules burst into smaller pieces. These small ink particles are then tiny enough to be carried away and eliminated naturally as bodily waste. Darker ink colors are easier to remove with laser than pigments that are close in color to natural skin tones, as there is more contrast for lasers to effectively target with dark colors against skin.

More intricate tattoo designs, multiple colors, area of skin coverage, and location of tattoo ink skin are all factors that can make removing tattoos with lasers more difficult. Amateur tattoo artists are known not properly injecting ink deep enough, thus ink is closer to the skin's surface. Ink closer to the skin's surface makes amateur tattoos fade naturally from sun and environmental exposure, as well as easier tattoos to remove with lasers compared to deep professional ink work. It's no secret that laser tattoo removal treatments are the most expensive tattoo removal method ranging on average 3-12 treatments, with sessions between $200-$500 each. Regardless, of the price, length of treatment process, and even the level of pain and discomfort lasers are still the most popular tattoo removal method today.
